The failure is rarely a single point
A water-loss event grows when an abnormal condition is not recognized, ownership is unclear, isolation is delayed or evidence is fragmented. Sensors are valuable when they sit inside an accountable operating loop.
Evidence cited in the research
- A Munich Re–WINT study covered 66 projects. Smart monitoring and shut-off were used on 27 projects, about 41% of the cohort, yet those projects represented 11% of reported water-loss events and 4% of total reported loss cost.
- HSB and Munich Re subsequently reported 73% fewer claims and 90% lower payouts on WINT-protected construction sites.
A practical control loop
ISO 45001 is not a water-engineering specification. Its contribution is organizational: defined responsibilities, operational control and continual improvement. IoT and AI can strengthen that system with continuous evidence and faster escalation.
